Only one of those items was on July 4 - LNER train's 125 mph. The rest occurred on the following dates:

"The King Who Lost America" -> January 31, 1820

Times Archive, 1880: Latest intelligence, Afghanistan -> September 3, 1880

MPs vote for 50 per cent pay rise -> May 25, 1954

In many ways Senator Jesse Helms embodies Tarheel characteristics -> October 25, 1984

Moon men return to earth ... -> July 25, 1969

The Siege of Mafeking -> January 19, 1900

The first article was on the death of King George III, who lost America on July 4, 1776.

The article on Jesse Helms reflects that Senator Helms died on July 4, 2008 (today).

I haven't looked at the rest, yet, for connections to July 4th.

Ding. Dong. The witch is dead. The wicked witch is dead. This gives a whole new meaning to Independence Day. I read that he died this morning and was rejoicing; though there'll be 10 to take his place.

well, it's fun to guess a connection, so here goes:

Today the members of parliment (MPs) voted against expense reform.

July 4th, 1969, LIFE magazine publishes a special issue, Off To the Moon

But any connections of July 4 to the Boer Wars or the Anglo-Afghan Wars still has me stumped, must think more...

Fights for independence were the best I could come up with.  Though I find the idea of the Dutch (Boer) fighting the British for independence in Southern Africa somewhat, shall we say, out of place.

Don't tell our northern neighbors how the King lost America.
